About The Institute

State Institute of Health and Family Welfare (SIHFW), Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow is an apex institute of the state for research and training in the field of medical, health and family welfare.

The Institute was previously known as 'Population Centre' and was established in the year of 1973-74 under 'India Population Project (IPP) - 1' with the objectives to conduct evaluation studies, base-line and end-line surveys, to develop MIES for project districts and to plan and implement the operation research (OR) projects.

The Management Training Cell was added to the 'Population Centre' in the year of 1980-81, under IPP - 2 with additional responsibility of organizing management development programmes for Deputy Chief Medical Officers and Senior Medical Officers etc. Moving on this track, IPP - 6 was implemented in the state during the year 1990-91 with a major emphasis on training component. Under IPP - 6, the Population Centre comprising of Management Training Cell was upgraded and renamed as the 'State Institute of Health and Family Welfare' which continues till date.

The institute has its own campus in Indira Nagar, Lucknow. It has an administrative block, training block, 2 hostels, 1 guest house and a library building. In addition to this, the residential area for its employees is also there. SIHFW has a conference hall capable of accommodating nearly 100 people at a time, a seminar room, and two lecture rooms (with a capacity of 40 participants each). The Institute has its own mess facility along with the hostels. The hostels may accommodate about 85 in-house participants at a particular time.

72 posts are in position at present. The institute provides technical support to a vast training infrastructure in the state i.e. 1 Tutor Training Center, 4 Health Supervisors Training Centers, 11 Divisional Health and Family Welfare Training Centers and 70 District Level Training Centers (ANM Training Centre / District Periphery Team). List of the Training Centers in the state is enclosed.
